Monika Adler (UK)
Involuntary Memory, 2013, 3:47
The Grandson of a Gulag prisoner suffers from historical trauma resulting from a cataclysmic history of genocide across generations. The collective emotional and psychological injuries cause unsettled emotional trauma and depression. He tries to purify and heal memories.

Monika K. Adler is a London-based Polish artist/filmmaker. Her work has been shown in exhibitions and video and film festivals internationally and been published in numerous magazines and publications. She is currently working on her debut feature film MONACO CLUB.

Angela Aguayo (USA)
Deathwork, 2013, 5:27
Darryl digs graves at a rural Midwestern cemetery established in 1863. His daily tasks are common, routine and mostly unnoticed. Taking care of the grounds where his community is laid to rest goes beyond weeding, raking and mowing the grass. Watching over these cemetery grounds also means knowing how history flows through the ritual practices of burying the dead.

Angela J. Aguayo is an Assistant Professor of Cinema and Digital Culture at Southern Illinois University, Carbondale. She is a media maker-scholar whose work encompasses production, theory, and history. She is an award winning writer, director and producer of four documentary shorts utilized in community engagement campaigns and screened at various festivals including the New York Underground Film Festival, The San Francisco Black Film Festival, The Oakland Underground Film Festival, Chicago International Social Change Film Festival, Boston Latino International Film Festival, River’s Edge International Film Festival and many more. She is currently working on her first feature length documentary, The Ritual.

Aleksander Johan Andreassen (Norway)
A Rock, 2013, 2:29
The video was originally shot as part of a portrait documentary about Roy, but the imagery had a life of its own, and I decided to do a short separate work on just the rock and Roy¨s relationship to it.

Aleksander Johan Andreassen is a Norwegian artist working primarily with video and film. He screens his work in exhibitions and festivals. Andreassen has also done videodesign for theater and cinematography on the stop motion film “Orfeus” (2012). He is currently doing his MA in fine art at Konstfack in Stockholm.

Collin Bradford (USA)
Deep Horizon, 2013, 6:35
Sublime landscape imagery is our cultural sedative, meted out in regular doses via advertising for industries like energy and technology. We are fed a calmly utopian optimism born of carefully selected sounds and sublime images. Deep_____ Horizon is an accelerationist response to the deployment of the rhetoric the sublime to sell techno-utopian complacency as compassionate futurism. It both embraces and explodes the visual and musical tropes of techno-utopian advertising, slowly building in speed and volume, starting with idyllic images of wind farms in construction in the countryside and finishing with the violent dissolution of the sound and images.

Collin Bradford makes videos, photographs, objects, architectural interventions, and other forms that explore how we relate as physical beings to the land and to technology and media and how we use language. His work has been exhibited throughout the United States as well as in Germany, Ireland, South Korea, Australia and elsewhere. He works and lives in Grand Rapids, MI, USA, where he also teaches in the Department of Art and Design at Grand Valley State University.

Catherine Del Buono (USA)
How to Not Get Raped, 2014, 3:04
This satirical video was inspired by advice posted on college websites that tell women how to avoid being raped. It speaks to the absurdity of placing responsibility and blame on the victim.

Brooklyn-based video artist Cat Del Buono began drawing and filming at an early age. She received a BA from Boston College, MFA from the School of Visual Arts, and attended the graduate film program at NYU. Her works have been shown in galleries, museums, and festivals including New York, London, Serbia, Sweden, and Hong Kong. Marina Fomenko (Russia)
Not Water, 2014, 4:44
Travelling by water from Moscow River to Volga River will inevitably bring you to the Moscow Canal locks. Gates are closing, huge walls arise around you, and you become a canal’s prisoner. This confinement in a trap of floodgates reminds us of Gulag prisoners who built this canal. Thousands of them died during construction. We do not know the exact number because the archives were destroyed at the beginning of the World War II. The author’s personal interest stems from the fact that her great-grandfather was a prisoner of the Gulag and participated in the construction of the Moscow Canal.

Marina Fomenko lives in Moscow, Russia, works with video and installation.
Participated in numerous exhibitions and festivals all over the world including Florence, Moscow, Kyoto, Paris, Wroclaw, Amsterdam, Beijing, Seoul, Kiev, Naples, Delhi, St. Petersburg, London and many others. Ela Goldman (Israel)
“Pogranicze” (Borderlands), 2013, 3:49
“Pogranicze” (Borderlands) shows a “carpet” comprised of over 400 dreidels set on the floor. The dreidels alternately spin to create an almost abstract pattern of color and form. Putting the familiar holiday game into a new context, this work is a tribute to the Jewish culture that was almost annihilated in WW2. The main element in this piece is the dreidel used as a symbol for the continuity of generations. This toy, which my children played with in Israel, is the same as the ones my ancestors used in Poland, before the war, and their heritage lives on with it.

Ela Goldman, born in Poland and currently living in Tel Aviv, Israel, is an interdisciplinary artist, focusing mostly on installation and video-art works. Goldman holds a PhD in from the Academy of Fine Arts in Gdańsk. She has previously studied cinema and theatre and worked as a set designer as well as head of scenography at the Atelier Theatre in Poland. Goldman has won several awards and honorary mentions for her artistic achievements and her works have been shown in prestigious venues in Poland and Israel. Since 1998, Goldman has been a lecturer for art at the Kibbutzim College in Tel Aviv.

Felice Hapetzeder (Sweden)
Yesterday was no good day, 2014, 6:00
An explorer in projects has reached the end of the road in search for creative meaning. The desire is to travel, the search for The Project and historical mystery. Is the artist a postcolonial tourist of sorts, a self-imposed challenger of cultural frontiers? There is very little, if any, remaining architecture from the days of Japanese occupation (1942-1945) in Singapore. The Japanese army built a Shinto temple respectively a shrine to honour their fallen in Bukit Timah Reserve and MacRitchie reservoir, two of the few remaining pockets of primary rainforest in the country.

Che-Yu Hsu (Taiwan)
November 11th 1970, 2012, 8:01
This work is about “Collective unconscious”. This is a piece of news about sitting statuary at Zhongshan Park in 1970. That was the period of martial law. Every image of my work is from Zhongshan Park, and the credit roll subtitles are derived from the old news video. Of course it’s not a memorial work. It’s about irony. This history is not true for me; I can only sense it as a ghost. Although I went back to Zhongshan Park to film, the park in my work is no longer a history, nor the real moment.

Kenji Kojima (Japan)
Composition Fukushima 2011, 2014
The Fukushima nuclear plants accident has not been stopped. It still has been going to contaminate the ocean and the soil. “Composition FUKUSHIMA 2011” was composed from RGB color data of news photographs of Fukushima nuclear disaster on the internet news sites by algorithm. The music was not an impression of a photograph of musical variations. It composed a score from image data directly. The art work performs a music with the original new image, the mosaic score, binary data of the score, and coordinates in RGB color space of the notes.

Kenji Kojima has been experimenting with the relationships between perception and cognition, technology, music and visual art since early 90s. He was born in Japan, and moved to New York in 1980. Software art “RGB Music” was started in 2007. It was an interdisciplinary artwork that converted visual data into a music by algorithm in attempts to discover relations between visuals and musics. The RGB Music series were exhibited in New York city, media art festivals of several cites in Europe, Brazil and other regions.

Elisabeth Leister (USA)
Strange Loop, 2014, 6.45
The impact of time and space on individual and shared memory is the primary theme in Strange Loop. Video footage, found photographs, drawing and abstract digital painting are woven into a reflective account that questions how images can connect us to places and to each other.
This internalization of time and place is explored through the contrast of actual experiences and visual representations of place, specifically from a recent trip to Iceland. The loop of memory and the blurring of precise details figure prominently.

Elizabeth Leister received an MFA in sculpture from The Milton Avery Graduate School of the Fine Arts at Bard College and a BFA in painting from the Tyler School of Art.
Her work has been exhibited at the Torrance Art Museum, Philadelphia Museum of Art, the Delaware Museum of Art, and the North Dakota Museum of Art; Art in General, Apex Art and P.S. 122 in New York; and Highways in Santa Monica

Mauricio Sanhueza (Peru)
Do You Smell That, 2014; 2:15
In July 2012 Peru regained its former distinction as the world’s top cocaine producer, according to an annual White House report that says Peruvian cocaine production was 358 tons. For this video I took well known movie clips and combined it with the video trailer’s audio about Peru as an exotic tourist destination made by the Peruvian Government. In this particular case the video is a sarcastic way to tell the viewer about the sense of smell and the connection of snorting cocaine for fun without knowing the violence and death that leads with it. So there is nothing wrong with your computer or TV screen, the aesthetics of the video is by choice.

Mauricio Sanhueza (Peru,1978), studied at the University of Lima from 1996 until 2000. He then continued his studies at the Lima visual arts school, Corriente Alterna, graduating in 2006 with top honors. In 2011 he obtain a bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts from San Marcos University. Since 2004 he has participated in several collective art exhibits and festivals in Peru and abroad. Mauricio’s videos have been screened at many international video-art and experimental short-film festivals and have won many awards.

Alina Vasilchenko (Russia)
I like going the the Pet Stores, 2014,7:00
The film tells a story of person who can’t accept the imperfect world and its injustice. On the other hand this person isn’t strong enough to fight, so feeling lonelyness and weakness, he tries to hide inside dreams and illusions.

I studied filmmaking in the oldest Russian film studio at “Mosfilm filmmakers course” , which gave me the possibility to learn from professionals who worked with such masters as Tarkovsky, Konchalovsky, Paradjanov. Having worked as a film producer assistant for 5 yers, I decided to try to make my own films using the experience and the simple technical equipment that I have.
I have shown my works in Rostov-on-Don, Moscow and Berlin, I have participated in several international online projects.

Simon Welch (France)
Focus, 2014, 7:37
A film about the narratives we tell ourselves to make sense of the imperfect narrative of our lives. Pierre, a retired French miner, who lives surrounded by birds and various domestic pets, describes how his life has been blighted by supernatural events. These references made to ghosts parallel sequences showing industrial remains preserved as memorials in the landscape, representing traces of a recent but nonetheless bygone age. The presence of caged birds recalls the use of canaries as warning systems in mines, but Pierre cannot escape forces (real or imaginary, psychological or socio-economic) unbound by geographical and physical constraints

Simon Welch is a British video artist who has lived in France since 1994. Following a foundation diploma in Art from West Surrey College of Art and Design and a BA in Fine Art from Liverpool Polytechnic, he pursued his studies at Strasbourg University where he obtained an MA and then a PhD in visual arts. His work has been regularly exhibited in international video festivals
